According to the sociological research conducted by International Charitable Organization “Environment-People-Law” and Kyiv International Institute of Sociology in November – December 20181, more than three quarters of the respondents (79%) agree with the statement that, as an individual, they can play a role in the environmental protection in Ukraine, at that 44% – “completely agree”, and 35% – “rather agree”. Only 16% of the respondents disagreed with this statement. What is interesting is that the picture is almost the same for the West, Center and South of the country.
In each of these regions, the part of those who agree with the statement that it is possible to play a role in the environmental protection is close to the All-Ukrainian indicator (and ranges within 78-81%). However, in the Eastern Region there are relatively less completely agreeable to this statement and relatively more rather agreeable to it.
The most common forms of public participation in the preservation of the environment are participation in volunteer clean-ups, environmental projects (19%), participation in public hearings on construction of new facilities, local environmental problems (10%), participation in environmental protests (8%). Each of 5% of the respondents said that they provided comments on a draft strategy, plan or programme, applied to the state authorities with a request for environmental information, applied to the authorities with an appeal on environmental issues. Each of 1% of those surveyed contributed financially to solving local environmental problems created or distributed the environmental content in mass media or social networks, or are members/volunteers of an environmental NGO. At the same time, 59% of the respondents did not do anything of the proposed list, and 7% were undecided.
The EU citizens are actively involved in environmental issues. Did you do any of the following? (% of all respondents, N=2034) |
From the regional perspective, residents of the southern region significantly less frequently indicated that they took part in public hearings, environmental protest actions, provided comments to a draft strategy, plan or programme. They also less often (2%) said that they applied to the state authorities with a request in comparison with the central region (8%), and less often (2%) mentioned about applying to the authorities with a petition, an open letter, in comparison with the Central and the Western regions (6% in each). Residents of the South (22%) and the West (26%) more often participated in volunteer clean-ups and environmental projects in comparison with residents of the Center (16%) and the East (7%). At the same time, three quarters of residents of the Eastern region did not do anything of the above, whereas in the Southern region 63% did nothing, in the Central – 55%, in the Western – 53%.
