EPL’s environmental scientists got to know from the register of EIA that LLC “PERZHANSKA ORE COMPANY” announced its intention to carry out the planned activities and assess its environmental impact1. The activity is related to the extraction of beryllium from the Perzhansky deposit located on the territory of Olevsk district in Zhytomyr region in the vicinity of villages of Perga, Rudnya Perganska, Yurovo.
As we reported earlier, the entire territory of the deposit falls within the limits of Polissya Natural Reserve, as well as partly within the limits of “Mykytche” Reserve and Regional Landscape Park “Slovechanskyi Ridge”. It was for this reason that the development of the deposit was not carried out until this time. It should be noted that in the past, this territory fell into the zone of radiation trace as a result of the Chornobyl accident. The impossibility of economic use of the territory as a result of radiation contamination in the past allowed to create here a protected area with the highest level of conservation – the Polissya Natural Reserve.2
Already in January 2018, the Zhytomyr oblast prosecutor’s office appealed to Zhytomyr Circuit Administrative Court to cancel decisions of the Regional Council No. 864 of 02.11.2017 (Proceedings No. 806/468/18) and No. 864 of 11.02.2017 (Proceedings No. 806/468 / 18).
At present, in both proceedings, the courts have taken decisions to secure the claim, that is, the action of the challenged decisions is suspended until the final decisions are made by the courts.
Ignoring this ban, the mining company continues the process of getting approvals for the mining.
