As of 01.01.2016, in Kherson region the Nature Reserve Fund consists of 79 objects of protected areas with total area of 272,700.20 hectares. These include the biosphere reserves “Askania Nova” and “Black Sea”, national natural parks “Dzharylhatskyi” and “Azov-Sivash” and other objects.
In the Kherson region, as well as throughout Ukraine, the beginning of the active establishment of protected objects and their documentary evidence occurred in the 1960s. The study revealed that the number of protected areas created in this period does not match the official data provided by the relevant regional environmental authority. In order to find information about the lost territories of protected areas in Kherson region we have retrieved from the State regional Archives copies of all decisions of state agencies on creation of regional protected areas since 1964. We have also done a comparative analysis with the current list of protected areas according to the data published by the Ministry of Environment and Natural resources of Ukraine in 2016 and 2014.
According to our calculations, the total area of lost objects (n = 7) is 1526.00 hectares, representing 0.56% of the area of all protected objects, which compared to other regions, illustrates a much better situation in the field of nature protection and compliance with the protection regime and preservation of valuable natural areas in Kherson region. The largest lost area is botanical natural monument of local importance ” Burkut tract ” which had the area of 1298 hectares and which first gained protected status back in 1928.
