15 % of the territory of Ukraine is covered by forests, which produce oxygen, clean air and water, and regulate microclimate. Forests also are a habitat for many rare plants and animals. Every fifth species of animals and every eighth species of plants from the Red Data Book of Ukraine disappear because of the forest logging. Along with this, forest is a renewable natural resource, and even highly developed countries of the EU and Northern America do not refuse from its use and demonstrate massive logging activity.
The goal of EPL in this research is to find balance between wilderness protection and natural resources use in order to prepare necessary legislation changes towards the achievement of our goal.
EPL is involved in:
- improvement, development, and commenting of the national legislation in the field of forest management and protected areas;
- holding of forest field work;
- evaluation of forest management and other documents for the fast and objective reaction to logging in various parts of Ukraine;
- public control for the national legislation compliance in the field of forest protection and forest management in cases of legislation violation, and taking protection measures according to the legislation in power in behalf of the organization;
- cooperation with other experts in this field, including forest workers of forestry management and protected areas, state bodies and public organizations, volunteers, activists, in particular by meetings, round tables, shared field work aimed to solve some topical problems in this field;
