World Bird Day is held annually as a part of UNESCO “Man and Biosphere” Program. On April 1, 1906, the International Convention on Bird Protection was signed. World Bird Day is not only anniversary of Convention, but also time when birds return from wintering. For the first time this day as a massive children’s holiday was held in the United States. A teacher from a town of Pennsylvania organized this. Soon he was supported by one of the most popular newspapers “Pittsburgh Chronicle Telegraph,” which began the popularization of the Bird Day. The list of birds that die out is expanded with sad regularity. More than 160 species and subspecies on the Earth are already extinct. In Europe, more than 50% of birds are endangered. In Ukraine, there are about 360 species of birds, together with birds that can cross the territory of the country – about 456 species. The Red Data Book of Ukraine (2009) includes 87 species of birds. |
