A seven-month EU project with the aim of promoting the role of paludiculture (sustainable peatland utilization) as a means of reducing carbon emissions, supporting sustainable development, and generating community-based renewable energy in the Black Sea region was launched on 1st May. The project is funded by a grant from the European Union’s Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum.
It will be conducted by a consortium of 3 international partners from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
It is led by Ukrainian NGO ‘Environment People Law ’, with partners from Ukraine – NGO “Agricola”; Moldova – Cross-border Cooperation and European Integration Agency; Georgia – Caucasus Green Area Union.
The main activities of the project are:
To prepare case studies from Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia about the potential for paludiculture at existing and adjacent former wetland sites;
To hold workshops in Ukraine and Georgia involving key stakeholder groups to raise their awareness about paludiculture and its benefits;
To share information and gain new knowledge by participating in the paludiculture sessions at the EcoSummit 2016 in Montpellier, France;
To prepare a report on the findings of the project as a contribution to the activities of the Working Group on environment, climate change and energy security of the EaP Civil Society Forum.
The target groups of the project compriselocal and regional authorities seeking to implement wise use policies at wetland sites as well as restoring ecosystem functions of damaged floodplains; local businesses in terms of sustainable wet agriculture and forestry, harvesting biomass, making renewable energy products (biogas, briquettes, pellets) and installing appropriate biomass boilers; local schools in respect of educating young people about the principles, practice and benefits of paludiculture. These target groups comprise the key stakeholders who will be invited to participate in the project workshops.
The project will provide the first opportunity to carry out comparable site-based studies on the application of paludiculture in wetlands of the Black Sea region. Participating in the EcoSummit 2016 will allow the results to be brought to a global research community, and the EaP CSF annual assembly is an excellent means for disseminating the findings across the EaP region. Moreover, the presence of all project partners in the stakeholder workshops will emphasise the international scope of paludiculture and how different countries can benefit from it.
