Russia’s aggressive attack on Ukraine leads not only to numerous casualties of civilian and defenders of Ukraine, the destruction of civilian infrastructure, but also to dire consequences for the environment.
The Chornobyl nuclear power plant and the Confinement Shelter are occupied and can’t be properly maintained. This causes a global man-made disaster risk.
Rivers, soils, air are polluted and natural ecosystems are destroyed, as a result of artillery, missile and bomb attacks.
The whole civilized world is expressing its support for Ukraine. At the same time, the world’s leading environmental organizations – WWF (except for the WWF-Ukraine national office and a number of other national offices), Greenpeace, BirdLife International, etc. – have not yet expressed their clear and direct position on the need to immediately stop Russia’s aggression and help Ukraine.
Putin’s aggressive militant regime, which possesses nuclear weapons and ignores international law and agreements, is no less threat to the plant Earth than global climate change. If this regime is not stopped in Ukraine, it will go on without stopping at anything.
That is why we, Ukrainian environmental NGOs, call on all environmentalists around the world to support Ukraine clearly and publicly, as well as demand that their governments do everything possible to stop Russia’s aggression
