International charitable organization Environment-People-Law (EPL), in collaboration with the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide (ELAW), is launching a new project: “Strengthening Environmental Democracy in Ukraine,” funded by The United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).
The two-year project aims to strengthen public participation in environmental justice through three thematic platforms to address environmental issues in the following areas:
– environmental impacts of the war,
– alternative energy, and
– fostering sustainable industry and agriculture.
NGOs and activists interested in these issues are encouraged to join the initiative.
The platforms will operate at the national level with participants engaging in institutional development trainings as well as trainings on five cross-cutting issues:
1) public participation in environmental decision-making,
2) EIA procedure,
3) access to justice in environmental matters,
4) defending environmental defenders, and
5) gender and the environment.
The project envisages the release of road maps for eco-activists, provision of advisory assistance to platform members by national and international experts, participation in the School of Environmental Activism, experience exchange, and development and implementation of joint activities to address environmental issues.
Through project activities, civil society representatives will learn about current democratic instruments to protect the environment and environmental rights, and address environmental issues. The project will also increase overall environmental awareness of citizens.
