UNEA and the World Bank experts have counted that 24 month of urgent environmental recovery will cost $ 30 millions. As experts do not have access to the entire territory for the large-scale assessment, it is expected that this sum will grow.
Besides the impacts that EPL has assessed, it was revealed that around 10-20 mines have been flooded, with the potential to cause massive environmental contamination. There was also emphasis on already known negative impacts: fires, damages to protected areas, destruction of the industrial factories, and sell explosions.
The study envisages that the recovery plan will need to be coordinated at three levels, by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the local governments, and the civil society organizations. While technical capacity is available on the state level, the report underscores the important role that environmental NGOs have already played in the process of monitoring and reporting on environmental damage.
