In our advocacy tour to Stockhom, Sweden, EPL representatives met with Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), one of the biggest environmental think tank in the world. SEI has its headquarters in Stockholm (Sweden) and centres in Bangkok (Thailand), Boston, Davis, and Seattle (US), Oxford and York (UK), Tallinn (Estonia), Nairobi (Kenya) and Bogota (Colombia). The SEI Foundation includes SEI HQ, SEI Asia, SEI Africa, SEI Latin America and the subsidiary SEI Oxford Office.
SEI is very much invovled in projects and activities worldwide, including Ukraine. Their tematic focuses include extractive industries and greening of steel industry, support of resilient energy supplies and infrastructure, climate change and protection of biodiversity. SEI assisted Bosina and Herzegovina in development of Environmental Strategy and Action plan.
In 2023 SEI started implementation of project: Green Agenda for Ukraine, Armenia, Gerogia and Moldova, with the goal to pursue innovative growth strategies to address climate change, build resilient and sustainable economies, and promote better health and wellbeing. The project will support Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine in their journey towards climate neutrality through green transition. Together with participating countries, it aims to create green transition roadmaps in each country paving a way to planning and mobilizing investments for building modern, sustainable economies and improving citizen’s health, well-being and security.
The project’s thematic focus revolves around a holistic approach to achieve climate neutrality, closely aligned with the principles of the European Green Deal. It aims to tackle key focus areas and crosscutting aspects, such as finance, digitalization, and social impacts. These include climate action, clean energy, circular economy, efficient renovations, sustainable food, sustainable mobility, preserving biodiversity and zero pollution.
This project will assist Ukraine to enhance its policy compatibility with the EU framework – commonly known as the European Green Deal, thereby facilitating the process of potential EU membership or integration. Our initiative will also help the countries to fulfil their commitments under the Paris agreement.
At this stage of the project, comprehensive national green transition assessments are carried out, then tailored green transition roadmaps for each country will be developed. Raising awareness on the advantages and pressing need for a green transition will be conducted, and knowledge-sharing and collaboration among the participating countries, regional organizations, donors and other stakeholders will be fostered.
SEI is open to cooperation with members of civil society and will support the green reconstruction and environmental reforms in Ukraine.
